Lineup for the 2022 Czech That Film series, May 13-22, 2022

The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles and the ELMA Foundation are delighted to announce the lineup selected for its eleventh annual Czech That Film series, designed to celebrate contemporary films from the Czech Republic. 
 
The opening night will take place in partnership with the Lycée Français de Los Angeles on Friday, May 13, 2022 at the Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz. The red carpet event will launch at 7:00 pm with a reception offering Czech inspired cuisine, followed by the enchanting puppet style animation EVEN MICE BELONG IN HEAVEN (2021, 80 minutes, Dir Denisa Grimmová and Jan Bubeníček) at 8:00 pm. Nominated for the European Film Award, this exceptional visual delight will be presented in English. For more information and RESERVATIONS
 

After the opening celebration, the festival will move to the virtual domain until May 22.

This 11th edition offers a colorful palette of contemporary Czech films of various formats and genres. The selection is so diverse that everyone can find a movie of their liking. The lineup includes a dark comedy thriller OCCUPATION by Michal Nohejl that dominated Czech Film Critics’ and Czech Lions Awards this year. We are further highlighting an intimate document DREAMS ABOUT STRAY CATS about the celebrated illustrator Petr Sís, directed by his own brother David Sís. For those in the mood for a light comedy, check out the DIARY OF A MODERN DAD, starring popular Czech actors Jiří Mádl and Tereza Ramba. The selection also includes a romantic drama TWO SHIPS or the latest feature by recognized director Olmo Omerzu, BIRD ATLAS.

 

Czech That Film also features several Czech animated shorts with an international appeal - such as Diana Cam Van Nguyen’s LOVE, DAD which won prizes at AFI Fest, Toronto IFF or BFI London last year, RED SHOES by Anna Podskalská, which premiered in Cannes’ Cinéfondation, or the short RAVEN, directed by rising star Eva Doležalová. In total, the showcase includes 17 titles - 6 feature films, 3 documentaries, and 8 shorts. All films are with English subtitles. You can browse the program here.

 

The festival is organized by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Czech Centers, and co-produced by the ELMA Foundation. This year, the festival partnered with the  Lycée Français de Los Angeles and the Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz. The series is supported by the Society of Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles (SVU), Artinii, Finále Plzeň Film Festival, and Animation is Film Festival.
