On Sunday, October 16, 2016 Consul General Pavol Šepeľál with his spouse took part in traditional celebrations of the October Czech National Day at the House of Czech and Slovak Republics in San Diego in Balboa Park.
This annual celebration is dedicated not only to show unique handmade costumes from Bohemia and Slovakia, but also folklore music and dances, this year performed by local children's groups Podkovička and Sluníčko, and also folklore group Karička with children and adults. The entire celebration was held in the spirit of tradition, which, naturally, includes Czech delicacies such as potato salad and koláčky.
For the Consul General it was the first year of participation in this event. After performance of Czech and Slovak national anthems performed by the children's group, he welcomed all present members of the diaspora in San Diego bay. He introduced himself and mentioned the continuous close ties between the Czech and Slovak Republic and thanked House for its activities promoting the two countries and their beauties and traditions.
The House of Czech and Slovak Republics in San Diego was founded in 1936 and is one of 32 independently operating NGOs in Balboa Park, which are part of e.i. House of Pacific Relations. It serves as a meeting place for those who either want to celebrate their Czech and Slovak Heritage or want to learn more about these unique cultures. You do not need to know either of the languages to become a member.
