M. Rilke and K. Kraus.

ABOUT THE GRAPHIC NOVEL

Sidonie

A graphic novel

Written by Tereza Srbová

Illustrated by Petra Josefína Stibitzová

Our story unfolds when a long-lost painting by the famous Czech artist Max Švabinský is found in an old attic in Prague. The mysterious face on the portrait belongs to Baroness Sidonie Nádherná (1885-1950), who was a muse to artists and writers including Rainier Maria Rilke and Karl Kraus. In four chapters capturing four days separated by decades and dedicated to the most important men in her life, we discover other layers of Sidonie's extraordinary personality. At first glance an educated and empathetic femme fatale, the Baroness was also a strong emancipated woman with a rich inner life and creative forces of her own. Passionate about arts and travel, she was one of the first women to hold a driver's license, and today she would be thought of as one of the first environmentalists due to her profound and holistic interest in nature and landscaping. Through an intimate window into Sidonie's life, featuring letters and diary excerpts, we follow major historical turning points over four different epochs as well as a fascinating woman's personal journey of self-discovery, cultivation of herself and her surroundings, and her battle to protect an important legacy against totalitarian regimes.
