The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles in cooperation with the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles is delighted to invite you to a release party and discussion of Death Strikes: The Emperor of Atlantis, an anti-war graphic novel by Dave Maass and Patrick Lay. This work is inspired by a suppressed satirical opera written in 1943 by Peter Kien and Viktor Ullmann, two prisoners at the Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia.
The event is taking place on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 7:00 PM at the Czech Consulate General. The author Dave Maass will be present IN PERSON to introduce his unnerving graphic novel, which has been newly translated from English to Czech. The presentation will be held in English.
ABOUT THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: Death Strikes: The Emperor of Atlantis is a new, critically acclaimed graphic novel adaptation of the opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis, written by Czech poet Peter Kien and composer Viktor Ullmann in 1943, while they were imprisoned in the Nazi’s Theresienstadt (Terezín) concentration camp and ghetto. The sci-fi/fantasy social satire imagines a world where Atlantis has become a brutal, technologically advanced dictatorship, leading Death himself to quit in protest of its emperor’s endless wars.
To celebrate the release of the Czech-language edition, graphic novelist Dave Maass will give a talk and presentation on the secret references and inspirations behind the work, including how designs were drawn from real places in the Czech Republic and Kien’s own illustrations. Signed copies of the graphic novel will be available for purchase.
