Representatives of the Embassy took part in the traditional commemoration ceremony organised by the Memorial Association for Free Czechoslovak Veterans at the Brookwood Military Cemetery.
Deputy Ambassador Michal Strouhal delivered a speech and, together with Military Attaché Brigadier General Vratislav Beran, laid a wreath at both the military and civilian sections of the cemetery. The event was attended by an extraordinary number of guests, ranging from political and military representatives to children from Czech and English schools. A guard of honour was formed by a group of 30 Czech boy scouts from the town of Šlapanice, who flew to England for the occasion.
The event was particularly emotional because Dr George Scott, who had been the Czech Legion's standard-bearer at commemorative events and had been chosen for this role by the veterans themselves, decided to step down after 56 years. He was presented with a special commemorative medal and plaque by representatives of the Czech and Slovak militaries.
