Revealing of a Memorial to Czechoslovak Pilot František Hekel

On Sunday, September 7, a memorial to Czechoslovak pilot Colonel František Hekel was ceremoniously unveiled on the shores of Loch Doon in southern Scotland. The pilot of the RAF's 312th Fighter Squadron died on October 25, 1941, when his Supermarine Spitfire Mk.II crashed into the lake during a training flight. His remains were never found.

The memorial takes the form of a stone Spitfire wing, which symbolically disappears beneath the surface of the water. It was designed by academic painter Pavel Holý from the Military History Institute in Prague. The work is made of light-colored granite and features inscriptions in Czech and English with symbols of the 312th Squadron and the Czech lion.
The ceremony, which ended with a memorial service, was attended by Markéta Pekarová Adamová, Chairwoman of the Chamber of Deputies, and Jana Černochová, Minister of Defense, who traveled to Scotland accompanied by Václav Bartuška, Czech Ambassador to the United Kingdom, and David Frouse, Consul General of the Czech Republic in Manchester. Among the guests were Senator Eva Ludková, local members of the House of Commons E. Stewart and J. Cooper, RAF officers, and representatives of the Ayrshire regional administration. The unveiling of the memorial was preceded by a symbolic flyover of Loch Doon by a historic Lancaster bomber.

About František Hekel (1915–1941)
He was a graduate of the Military Academy in Hranice. After the occupation, he left via Poland and the USSR for Great Britain, where he joined the RAF. He began flying with the 312th Squadron in September 1941, shortly before his death. He was awarded the Polish Krzyż Walecznych medal. The wreckage of his plane was not found until 1982, and after extensive reconstruction, it has been on display at the aviation museum in Dumfries, near the site of the tragedy, since 2017.
