Czech Foreign Minister´s meetings in London

On Wednesday 20th March 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Tomáš Petříček, met with the Chairman of the Interparliamentary Group of Friends of the Czech Republic, Ian Liddell-Grainger MP, spoke with his British counterpart, Jeremy Hunt MP, gave a lecture in Chatham House and took part in the BBC´s Hard Talk.

Minister Petříček assured the Chairman of the Interparliamentary Group of Friends of the Czech Republic and its Vice-Chairman, Lord Anderson, that mutual good cooperation in trade, research and education will continue even after brexit.

The main topics of the meeting of the Czech Foreign Minister with the British Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt MP, were the protection of Czech and British citizens after brexit, the current political developments and future cooperation in the field of security. “The UK will remain an important partner for the Czech Republic in many areas even after leaving the EU. In addition to security, we consider the development of cooperation in the field of cultural and school exchange to be a priority”, said Minister Petříček after the meeting. At the end, the two Ministers exchanged their national team´s football shirts, on the occasion of the qualifying match between the Czech Republic and England (EURO 2020) at Wembley on 22nd March.

The Head of Czech Diplomacy then visited the Royal Institute of International Relations - Chatham House – where he gave a lecture on future security cooperation between the EU and the UK after brexit. "I think it is crucial that the Great Britain, even after brexit, participates in EU missions and operations under the Common Security and Defence Policy", the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic said.

At the end of his visit, Minister Petříček was a guest of the prestigious BBC TV News programme "Hard Talk", where he talked about brexit negotiations and other current topics with the prominent British journalist, Stephen Sackur.
