Ambassador Chatardová attended the funeral of veteran Major Ervín Hoida

On Friday 15 March in Wirral, Ambassador Marie Chatardová attended the funeral of Major Ervín Hoida, the last Czech World War II veteran in England.

Major Hoida died on 14 February 2024 at the age of 105. The Ambassador was joined by representatives of the Military Office of the President of the Republic, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in the UK and the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic. The coffin was accompanied by a guard of honour from the Czech Army and representatives of the British Army.

Major se Hoida was born in Ostrava on 30 November 1918. After the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939, he fled the country and served in France and later with the Czechoslovak Independent Armoured Brigade in the United Kingdom. After D-Day he took part in the liberation of Europe and returned to Czechoslovakia in 1945. However, he returned to the UK a few months later due to the growing communist threat.
