On Tuesday, 23 June 2026, a memorial plaque dedicated to Czechoslovak fighter ace Alois Vašátko was ceremonially unveiled at Start Point in southern England. The commemorative event honoured his bravery and sacrifice during the Second World War.
The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the United Kingdom, Václav Bartuška, Defence Attaché Brigadier General Miroslav Heger, Pavel Kugler from the Department for War Veterans and War Graves of the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic, as well as representatives of the United Kingdom’s armed forces, veteran organisations, and members of the Newman family. The Newman family made the project possible by allowing the plaque to be installed on their land.
The plaque is symbolically located at the point on the mainland closest to where Alois Vašátko’s aircraft fell into the sea 84 years ago following an aerial battle with German aircraft.
The project was financially supported by the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic. Special thanks are also extended to Tom Doležal of the Free Czechoslovak Air Force Associates and researcher Jan Golaň, who initiated the idea of establishing the memorial.
The unveiling of the plaque serves as a dignified reminder of the courage of Czechoslovak airmen who contributed to the defence of the United Kingdom and strengthens historical awareness as well as Czech–British relations.
