Czech School Manchester Gala Dinner

On Friday 3 February 2017, the Czech School in Manchester held a gala dinner to mark the 5th anniversary of its founding. The celebration included a rich cultural programme.

The Czech School in Manchester was founded as a civic association of parents of Czech children by Mrs Pavla Matásková who is still the chair of the association and thanks to whose selfless work and enthusiasm the school goes from strength to strength. The main activity of the school is teaching the Czech language, which takes place in two pre-school classrooms and three school classrooms. In total, the school educates about 50 children and it also organises numerous special events, e.g. theatre performances, St. Nicholas Day, trips, Czech language courses for adults, etc. In 2016, the association was transformed into a charity, the aim of which is to engage also in the promotion of Czech culture and advisory activities for compatriots living in the Greater Manchester area.

The gala dinner was held in the beautiful premises of St. Bede's College, whose campus accommodates the Czech school's Saturday classes. Among the guests were the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Manchester, Mrs. Eva Ross and her husband, members of the association and, parents and friends of the school. For the Czech Embassy in London, Mr. Aleš Opatrný, the Head of its Business and Economic department and Ms. Jana Čechlovská, Press Secretary had the pleasure to participate. They passed warm greetings from Ambassador Libor Sečka, who unfortunately could not attend himself, and gave his assurances of the support of the Czech Embassy to the school's activities and to the Czech community living in Manchester and the surrounding area.

The evening also included a cultural programme in which Czech cellist Petr Prause (member of the Talich Quartet) took part. His emotional performance of Dvořák, Janáček and Martinů pieces received rousing applause from the gathered diners. This was followed by the Pepa Hervert ensemble who entertained the guests with a fun cabaret.
