Given the importance of this year's elections in Georgia for the future domestic and foreign policy orientation of the country, an exceptionally large group of observers from Czechia has been sent. In addition to the Czech mission, a number of international organizations and delegations came to observe the parliamentary elections on 26 October. This mission comprised a total of 529 observers from 42 OSCE participating states
"Election observation is one of the most beneficial direct tools for promoting democracy, and the situation in Georgia in particular has now shown this. We sent 22 Czech observers. In addition, Czechia participates in all election observation missions and we are among the most successful countries in sending election observers," said Minister Lipavský about the Czech mission in Georgia.
The objective of the OSCE Electoral Mission to Georgia was to assess whether the elections were conducted in accordance with OSCE commitments and other international obligations and standards for democratic elections, as well as national legislation. The conclusions of the observation of the pre-election situation and the election day were published in the so-called OSCE Preliminary Statement, which was issued on Sunday 27 October. The statement noted that the election day, while procedurally well organised, was fundamentally marked by a tense environment and several incidents of physical conflict. The statement highlighted, among other things, the widespread intimidation of voters, the obstruction of the work of citizen observers, the unequal media environment and the wide disparity in financial resources for the electoral campaign.
