Minister Lipavský addresses the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York

On 13 March, the Head of Czech Diplomacy attended the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) in New York. He also addressed the Security Council for the third time. Subsequently, he met with the Cuban community and representatives of the Cuban opposition in Miami.

"Czechia has made significant progress, we have managed to reduce the gender pay gap by 6.1 per cent since 2017 and 60 per cent of university graduates are women," the Minister said in his national address at the UN.

He launched a side event co-organized by Czechia called "Boys Don't Cry" alongside Envoy for Human Rights Klára Šimáčková Laurenčíková. The discussion, which was of particular interest to participants, focused on the role of men in finding common solutions to prevent gender-based violence.

On the same day, the head of Czech diplomacy also addressed the Security Council for the third time since taking office. This time, the Minister's speech focused on conflict prevention and the impact that wars have on women. In his speech, he called on the Russian Federation to immediately release journalist Alsu Kurmasheva.

At the end of a packed programme in New York, the Minister met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. "We discussed ways to make the organisation more effective and also how to bring back Ukrainian children barbarically abducted by the Russian occupiers," the minister said after the meeting.

After moving to Miami, the Minister spoke to students at Dade College. The students' questions were mainly about Russian imperial aggression and the growing role of China. "We really can't bail on the Ukrainians now. Investing in a free and democratic Ukraine will pay off just as investing in a free central Europe paid off 25 years ago," Minister Lipavsky stressed to the students before leaving for a meeting with Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis. This was followed on Friday by a meeting with representatives of the Cuban opposition. "Václav Havel was building on his own reality when he said there were no guarantees for dissidents. But there is one thing we can guarantee. Czechia stands on the side of those who fight for human rights and democracy," Minister Lipavský assured. At the end of the programme, he also met with the leadership of the Czech expatriate community.
