Statement of Czechia on the Situation in Georgia

Czechia fully endorses the statement by High Representative / Vice-President of the Commission Kaja Kallas and Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos on Georgia of 1 December 2024, regretting Irakli Kobakhidze's statement on the Georgian Dream's decision not to pursue the opening of EU accession negotiations and rejecting EU financial support until 2028. Czechia strongly condemns the violence against peaceful protesters, journalists and opposition representatives.

Czechia has been a long-standing partner of Georgia and supporter of Georgia’s EU and NATO memberships in line with the aspiration of a large majority of Georgian citizens. Georgia has been one of the priority countries of the Czech development and transition cooperation, focused on the social sector, rural development, the rule of law and overall support of civil society and independent media.

In the course of previous months, Czechia has repeatedly expressed its deep concerns about the Georgian Dream government’s increasingly antidemocratic and anti-Western steps, leading to infringements on Georgian citizens’ rights and freedoms and endangering their European future.

We call upon the Georgian leadership to reverse its anti-democratic course and adopt comprehensive and sustainable reforms in line with European values.  Czechia stands with people of Georgia and will continue to support Georgian civil society and independent media and Georgian people’s rightful democratic and European aspirations.
