On May 4 and 5, 2026, an official visit of the President of the Republic of Finland, Alexander Stubb, to the Czech Republic took place. President Stubb met with his counterpart Petr Pavel, as well as with the Vice‑President of the Senate, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, and the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. The two presidents also attended a business forum, spoke at the conference Europe as a Task, and held discussions with students of the College of Europe and former trainees of EU institutions.
On May 4, the visit began with a welcome ceremony at Prague Castle, followed by talks between the presidents and their delegations. The heads of state focused primarily on security issues and the risks and challenges facing Europe today. The discussions addressed strengthening the European pillar of NATO, support for Ukraine, and the shifts in US foreign policy. “Russia remains one of the most significant threats facing Europe, regardless of when and how the war in Ukraine ends. We agreed that European security must be based on its own capacities and capabilities, but also on a much stronger will to defend itself independently – even without the participation of the United States, should such a situation arise,” said President Pavel. Delegation talks also covered education, support for innovation, and the development of mutual trade and investment.
President Stubb was also received by the First Vice‑President of the Senate Jiří Drahoš, and subsequently by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura. Discussions likewise focused on foreign and security policy issues and Finnish‑Czech cooperation. The first day of the visit concluded with an official dinner at Prague Castle.
On the second day, the presidents began their programme with a joint run through Prague and then opened the Czech‑Finnish business forum. President Stubb was accompanied by a delegation of representatives from 26 Finnish companies operating in construction, healthcare, defence and technology sectors. His programme continued with talks with Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, focusing, among other topics, on security and healthcare.
In the afternoon, Presidents Stubb and Pavel spoke at the conference Europe as a Task, dedicated to key European challenges. Following their opening remarks, they discussed the idea that Europe, its prosperity and security, are not a given, but a project that Europeans must daily and actively work on. The programme concluded with a meeting between the presidents and students of the College of Europe and former trainees of the European Parliament and the European Commission.
The visit followed up on previous bilateral highest-level contacts between the two countries. The last official visit of a Finnish head of state in Czechia took place in 1996, when President Martti Ahtisaari travelled to Prague. In 2005, Czech President Václav Klaus visited Finland. Alexander Stubb visited Prague also in 2024 in connection with the GLOBSEC forum.
