Languages Connect: European Day of Languages 2026

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki traditionally participated in the European day of Languages events, held at Helsinki Central Library Oodi on 24 September. 2026. The goal of this European initiative is to highlight the importance of language skills, encourage foreign language learning and to promote linguistic diversity, multilingualism and understanding between peoples.

With representatives from other European Embassies and cultural institutes and from the European Commission Representation in Finland, we welcomed at a "Language café" 248 students and their 19 teachers this year! We explored together through games and interactive activities Czech language, this year also in connection with another Slavic language, Polish. The students could also gain basic knowledge of the Czech culture in a fun, informal setting.

Afterwards, the traditional recital in European languages presented to the audience a children's book by Lewis Carroll Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This book was published in 1865 and is one of the world's most translated children's books – there are 174 official translations.

An excerpt from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was read in several EU languages, incl. Czech language, and sign languages and all participants could enjoy a pleasant atmosphere with the diversity of European languages. Many thanks to Lenka Harju for presenting the Czech excerpt.
