Czech and Slovak culture in Tampere

From February 21 to March 29, 2026, the Laikku Culture House in the center of Tampere will host the exhibition Echoes of Two Homelands, showcasing the work of Czech and Slovak artists living in Finland. Their pieces reflect the coexistence of multiple homes, where people, memories, places, and lived experiences intertwine.

The exhibition will be on display at the Laikku Gallery daily from Tuesday to Sunday, and admission is free. Throughout the duration of the event, a rich accompanying program will be available, appealing to both documentary film enthusiasts and families with children. We would particularly like to invite you to two highlights of the program, which have been co-organized by the Bohemia-seura ry association and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki:

Documentary I’m Not Everything I Want to Be – A Unique Portrait of Libuše Jarcovjáková

The documentary I’m Not Everything I Want to Be, directed by Klára Tasovská, captures the life and work of Libuše Jarcovjáková, a legend of Czech photography and a free-spirited woman who defied all conventions. Her life is a mosaic of fascinating encounters and wild stories – from the gritty underground of communist Czechoslovakia and exclusive fashion shoots in Tokyo to her dramatic escape to West Berlin, where she witnessed the fall of the Iron Curtain. From thousands of analog photographs and personal diary entries, director Klára Tasovská has crafted a formally unique documentary that captivated audiences at the Berlinale and was selected as the Czech Republic's official entry for the 2026 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
The film will be screened on March 6, 2026, from 5 pm to 6.30 pm in the Music Hall of the Laikku Culture House. It is presented in Czech with English subtitles, and admission is free.

Short Films Pat & Mat

The short films featuring the handymen Pat & Mat bring back the two friends who first appeared together in 1976. These two clumsy characters tackle various mishaps and repairs, often leading to humorous situations. During the afternoon, two identical blocks of short films will be shown to ensure the screening is suitable for children. As these slapstick comedies are dialogue-free, they are ideal for all ages and language groups.
This screening will also take place in the Music Hall of the Laikku Culture House, on February 21, 2026, from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and is free of charge.

Other Activities

In addition to the aforementioned events, a variety of other accompanying activities are available, including several workshops, additional film screenings, and themed discussions. The entire program is designed to present Czech and Slovak culture in its diversity and offer visitors the chance to explore it from multiple perspectives.
Complete information is available on the Tampere website – https://tapahtumat.tampere.fi/en-FI.
