Martin Dvorak

Martin Dvořák was born in Prague, Czech Republic, in November 1956. He attended The University of Economics (Vysoká škola ekonomická) in Prague. Since 1982 he has been working as the Controller at the Headquarter of the meat factory in the City of Hradec Králové in East Bohemia. Because of his conflict with communist regime he lost that position and as a consequence he worked until the “velvet revolution” as a manual worker in a slaughterhouse.

After the break of the communist regime he started his career in the local government, first as the Deputy Chairman of the Regional People´s Committee /Okresní národní výbor/ and in December 1990 he became the first free and democratically elected Mayor of the City of Hradec Králové after fifty years. In 1994 he was re-elected for the next election period.

In 1998 he accepted the offer of United Nations and served as the Local Administrator of UN Mission in Kosovo /UNMIK/ in cities of Istog/Istok and Gjakova/Djakovica till 2002. As a reflection of his experiences from Kosovo he published the book of his remarks named “Kosovo under my skin”.

In 2003 he was delegated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a member of the group of Czech experts to Iraq, serving in the Coalition Provisional Authority /CPA/ in Basra as the Political Advisor to the Regional Administrator of South Iraq and later in Bagdad, where he was as a member of the Council for International Coordination /CIC/ involved in the organization of the Donors Conference held in Madrid in December 2003.

Between 2005 and 2009 he worked as the Head of Economic Section at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, D.C.. After his return from USA he was appointed as the Head of Department of Bilateral Economic Relations and Export Promotion.

On September 3, 2012 he took over his office in New York as Consul General of the Czech Republic.

Martin Dvořák is remarried, has two adult daughters and one son.
