On September 30, 2024, the Václav Havel Prize was awarded in Strasbourg. The prestigious prize was given to Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado for her long-standing fight for civil and political freedom in Venezuela.
María Corina Machado is the co-founder of Súmate, an organization focused on promoting civil rights and democratic elections in Venezuela. Despite repeated repression and a ban on running for office, Ms. Machado continues her struggle for a democratic society and human rights. Her daughter accepted the award on her behalf in Strasbourg, while Machado expressed her gratitude through an online speech in which she emphasized the importance of Havel’s values for Venezuela.
