The Council of Europe Commemorated Franz Kafka

On October 30, the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the Council of Europe, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Austria and the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and HealthCare (EDQM), organized a screening of the Austrian documentary Kafka’s Letzte Reise (loosely translated as “Kafka’s Last Journey”), which focuses on Kafka’s struggle with tuberculosis. The event marked the 100th anniversary of Franz Kafka’s death as well as the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the EDQM.

The evening dedicated to Franz Kafka was opened by Austrian Ambassador Aloisia Wörgetter. The Czech Ambassador, Petr Válek, then emphasized the European dimension of Kafka’s writings, while EDQM Director Petra Doerr presented the Council of Europe’s efforts in tuberculosis treatment and public health.

The screening attracted a large audience, including diplomats, Council of Europe staff, and other guests, nearly filling the venue. After the screening, attendees were invited to discuss Kafka’s literary legacy and life over a glass of wine, highlighting the cultural significance of Kafka’s work for a European audience.
