Dunja Mijatović (Bosnia and Herzegovina) was elected as the new Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights. Replacing the current Commissioner Nils Muižnieks as of April 1 of this year, Mijatović will become the first woman to hold this position.
A secret vote took place during the January plenary session of the Organisation’s Parliamentary Assembly, where Mijatović clinched a narrow victory over Pierre-Yves Le Borgn’, former French Deputy to the Assembly.
During the last 7 years, Dunja Mijatović was the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, before she served as Director of Broadcasting at the Communications Regulatory Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. She was also the Chairperson of the European Platform of Media Regulatory Authorities and of the group of specialists on freedom of expression.
The Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights is an independent institution established in 1999 by the Council of Europe to promote awareness of and respect for human rights, facilitate the activities of national ombudspersons, identify possible shortcomings and to mediate a dialogue between governments and the civil society. The term of office is 6 years with no possibility of re-election.
