Scope of Activities:
The Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg is in charge of representing Czech interests in this organization. The Permanent Representation promotes priorities of the Czech foreign policy, particularly in the field of human rights, and the compliance with commitments arising from statutory and accession documents, as well as from international treaties. As a diplomatic mission of the European Union member state, the Permanent Representation takes part in the negotiations on common EU statements and promotes their enforcement in the Council of Europe.
The Czech Republic became a member of the Council of Europe on 30 June 1993. The Minister of Foreign Affairs is a member to the Committee of Ministers, the decision-making body of the organization. The Head of the Permanent Representation – the Ambassador – is the permanent representative to the Council of Europe. Other statutory bodies are the Parliamentary Assembly, whose quarterly sessions are attended by a delegation of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, having its sessions twice a year, with the participation of Czech mayors and regional representatives.
The Czech Republic is committed to the obligations arising from its membership in the Council of Europe, the compliance of which is regularly checked by the respective monitoring mechanisms. An overview of its country-based results is available at the Council of Europe website.
It is not the task of the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the Council of Europe to either promote diplomatic relations with the hosting country or to provide visa and consular services. The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Paris and the network of honorary consular offices throughout France is in charge of these issues.
