Czech Trade Mission Enhances Cooperation in Michigan

The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago was honored to host the Czech Minister of Transport, Martin Kupka, and the Vice-President of the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic, Bohdan Wojnar, who led a trade mission to the United States, including Michigan, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Consulate.

The mission brought together representatives from leading Czech companies and top universities across various fields, including transport innovation, smart mobility, and sustainable infrastructure. The delegation visited several U.S. cities: Atlanta, San Francisco, Detroit, and Ann Arbor. Despite a packed schedule and the U.S. spring break, the Czech delegation gained valuable insights into the American thriving mobility ecosystem.

The business highlight of the Detroit program was a B2B event at the Newlab at Michigan Central, organized by the Czech government trade promotion agency, CzechTrade. The event was officially opened by Czech Ambassador to the United States, Miloslav Stašek; Minister Martin Kupka; Detroit Deputy Mayor, Melia Howard; and Vice-President Bohdan Wojnar. They emphasized the shared strengths of both regions - high-tech manufacturing traditions and engineering excellence - which present significant opportunities for future collaboration. The forum fostered lively discussions and opened doors for new partnerships.

Bilateral meetings between Minister Kupka and Deputy Mayor Howard, as well as with Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, further confirmed the mutual interest in exploring new avenues of cooperation.

One of the key milestones of the visit took place in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the University of Michigan´s College of Engineering and Brno University of Technology - marking the beginning of formal cooperation between the two institutions. After the signing ceremony, the delegation toured the campus, visited MCity, and Minister Kupka had a unique opportunity to explore the Battery Lab. Meanwhile, the business delegation learned about Michigan Engineering´s corporate partnerships and current research priorities.

In addition to the business and academic program, Michigan also offered a warm social event with the local Czech-American community, many of whom are members of Sokol Detroit. This gathering provided an excellent opportunity for further social networking and cultural exchange in the jurisdiction of the Czech Consulate in Chicago.
