The Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) has begun its winter Australian tour, which will focus on the music of Czech composer Antonín Dvořák and Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. Concerts will take place in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Newcastle. The tour will run until 19 August 2023.
The performance series always opens with Dvořák's Serenade for Strings, a musical piece that illustrates the image of the Czech landscape in the composer's homeland. This will be followed by Bartók's String Quartet No. 5, a challenging piece known for its wide range of emotions.
The music of the world's classical music masters will then be joined by the music of Caroline Shaw, a contemporary New York composer who has won a Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award. Her music has a light, dance-like character, just like Dvořák's.
The ACO was founded in 1975, based in Sydney and, in addition to Australian tours, frequently performs in Asia, Europe and the USA, including regular appearances at London's Wigmore Hall, New York's Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Vienna's Musikverein and Washington's Kennedy Center.
