On Friday, 20 June 2025, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic to Australia and non-resident Ambassador to the Kingdom of Tonga, Ms Jana Tyrer, presented her Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Tupou VI during an official ceremony held in the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga, Nuku’alofa. By presenting her credentials, she officially commenced her tenure as the non-resident Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Kingdom of Tonga.
During the official visit, Ambassador Tyrer met with representatives of the Tongan government, the diplomatic corps, and local institutions. During discussions with the Crown Prince, who also serves as Minister of Foreign Affairs, they explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of education, agriculture, and sustainable development.
The Ambassador also met with representatives of partner countries accredited to Tonga, including Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Her programme included a meeting with the local Chamber of Commerce, consultations with representatives of Christ's University In Pacific, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Fisheries. Discussions focused on opportunities for collaboration in science, research, and enhancing economic resilience.
Ambassador Tyrer also visited the Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Nuku’alofa, where she met with Honorary Consul Mrs Robina Nakao, who accompanied her throughout the visit.
The programme also included participation in a formal reception held in honour of newly accredited ambassadors and high commissioners.
The visit to Tonga followed Ambassador Tyrer’s regional activities in the Pacific, during which she had previously visited Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, and Samoa. This trip reflects the Czech Republic’s long-standing commitment to strengthening relations with Pacific Island countries, supporting sustainable development, and expanding international cooperation in areas of shared interest.
