Launch of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)

Starting 12 October 2025, the European Union is progressively launching its new Entry/Exit System (EES) at external border crossing points of the 29 Schengen Member States. This digital system will replace manual passport stamping for short stays and enhance border security, efficiency, and traveller convenience.
What is the EES?
The EES is a state-of-the-art border management system that electronically records the entry and exit of non-EU nationals traveling for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period). It will collect:
- Biometric data (facial image and fingerprints)
- Travel document details
- Date and place of entry/exit
- Refusals of entry, if applicable
Key Dates
- 12 October 2025: Progressive roll-out begins.
- 9 April 2026: Full implementation across all external border crossing points.
- 10 April 2026: Passport stamping will be replaced by electronic records.
