Election of the President of the Czech Republic 2023

The President of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic has announced that next year an election of the President of the Czech Republic will take place and has set the dates for the election to be held on Friday, January 13 and Saturday, January 14, 2023. Following the election, a second round of the election may possibly then take place on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28, 2023.

 

Election Date

 

First Round

Voting will take place on both:

  • Friday 13 January 2023 between 14.00 and 22.00
  • Saturday 14 January 2023 between 08.00 and 14.00

 

A possible Second Round

A possible Second Round of voting may take place on both:

  • Friday 27 January 2023 between 14.00 and 22.00
  • Saturday 28 January 2023 between 08.00 and 14.00

 

In Australia, voting will take place at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra and the Consulate of the Czech Republic in Sydney.

 

Eligibility

 

Citizens of the Czech Republic who are either:

registered in the special voters' list maintained by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra or Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Sydney, or

who present a voter's card issued by the municipal authority in whose territorial district in the Czech Republic in which they have permanent residence, or

who present a voter's card issued by another embassy of the Czech Republic abroad in whose special voters' list they are registered,


will be able to vote.

 

Note: A voter is a citizen of the Czech Republic who will be 18 years of age at least on the second day of the election.

 

A person who is not registered on the special voters' list maintained by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra or the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Sydney may, for the purposes of the Presidential election, have his or her name entered on the register by 4.00 p.m. on 4 December 2022, by which time a written application for registration may be delivered or handed in at the relevant office. The procedure and conditions for enrolment are set out in our article.

 

What to bring

 

Every voter is obliged to present a valid Czech citizenship card or a valid Czech passport, diplomatic or service passport or a valid Czech travel document to prove his or her identity and citizenship of the Czech Republic before voting; if he or she fails to do so, he or she will not be allowed to vote.

 

Voter's Card Deadline

 

Voters who are registered on the special electoral roll maintained by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra or Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Sydney and wish to vote in any other electoral district in the Czech Republic or a special electoral district abroad may apply to the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra or Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Sydney for a voter registration card in person, by post or electronically through a data box.
 

The application in paper form, bearing a certified signature of the voter, or in electronic form, sent via a data box, must be received by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra or the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Sydney by 16.00 on 6 January 2023 for the first round of the presidential election.

In the case of a in person delivery of an application for a voter card, this period ends at 16.00 on 11 January 2023 for the first round of the presidential election or at 16.00 on 25 January 2023 for the second round.

 

The deadline for submitting an application/request to be issued a voter's card for the second round of the election is 16.00 on 20.01.2023, if the request is sent by post or by data mailbox (Sections 33(1) and 56(6) of the Act).

The deadline for submitting an application/request in person to be issued a voter's card for the second round of the election is 16.00 on 25.01.2023 (Sections 33(1) and 56(6) of the Act).

 

Voters who vote in a special polling station abroad will receive their ballot papers at the polling station. After receiving the official envelope and the ballot papers, he/she shall enter the area designated for the processing of the ballot papers. If the voter does not go to this area, he/she will not be allowed to vote. After leaving the ballot box, the voter shall place the official envelope and the ballot paper in the ballot box in front of the special precinct election commission.

It is not possible to vote in a portable ballot box outside the territory of the Czech Republic. It is not possible to vote by correspondence.
