On April 29, 2025, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Cairo hosted the first professional meeting of Egyptian bohemists, aiming to facilitate a deeper exchange of experiences between educators and students of the Czech language and literature. The meeting was organized in cooperation with the Czech language lectureship established by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and academic staff of the Faculty of Al Alsun at Ain Shams University.
The meeting was inaugurated by lecturer Veronika Resslová and Ambassador Ivan Jukl, who in their speeches emphasized the importance of Czech languages studies for strengthening Czech-Egyptian relations. The meeting, which took place in the Embassy's representative premises, included several expert lectures and a thematic discussion. Members of the academic community from Ain Shams University focused on literary, translatological and linguistic issues.
The programme of the event was not limited to theoretical concepts only, but after the introductory session there were discussions devoted to specific topics such as translations of Czech prose, fairy tales, specifics and limitations of machine translation or challenges in teaching Czech grammar in the Egyptian environment. There was a great response among the participants to the contributions focused on practical experiences from translation practice and methodology of teaching Czech as a foreign language. The guests of honour who participated through online platform were Dalibor Dobiáš, PhD, from the Institute for Czech Literature of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Prof. Marie Čechová, a renowned expert in the field of Czech linguistics and former mentor of some of the teachers currently working at Ain Shams University.
