Ambassador Jakub Skalník spoke at the Belgian Beer Weekend at Brussels City Hall, where he debated the importance of beer culture with the Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. Both agreed that beer consumption is declining due to rising inflation and people increasingly preferring to drink at home. Belgium even hit a record low in exports last year - a 7.5% drop for 2023.
Other important guests included Brussels Mayor Philippe Close, the president of the Belgian Brewers Association, Bernard Deryckere, and the head of the largest brewing group, AB InBev, Michel Doukeris. The latter was inducted into the "Knighthood of the Brewers' Paddle", a tribute to his contributions to Belgian beer.
