On Saturday, the 7th of September, Ambassador Jakub Skalník attended a commemorative event marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the town of Ronse in the province of East Flanders from Nazi occupation. Ronse was the first-ever Flemish town to be liberated by the Allies.
Consequently, Monday the 9th of September 2024 marks 80 years since another Belgian city, Liege, was liberated during the Second World War. To mark this important anniversary, a commemorative event was held, which was attended by Jakub Skalník, along with other ambassadors, who laid a wreath at the memorial plaque dedicated to the 17th Rifle Battalion of Liege. This unit took part in the liberation of Pilsen on May 6th 1945. The ceremony at the site of the resistance fortress, where 414 white crosses now commemorate the fallen, was also attended by Queen Mathilde of Belgium.
