In August, one of the most important contemoporary Chinese painters Zhang Xiaogang and his wife Jia Jia visited the Czech Republic. Although their visit was of a private character, a number of interesting meetings and dialogues with Czech artists took place during its course. Zhang Xiaogang visited the studios of Jan Saudek, Vladimír Židlický, Tomáš Císařovský and Vladimír Kokolia.
In Petrkov, he greeted Daniel and Jiří Reynek, sons of a famous Czech poet and printmaker. In Brno, he admired the architectural modernity of the Villa Tugendhat and in Prague he learnt, with unusual interest, about the history as well as the current function of the Prague Castle. He did not leave out a visit to the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the National Gallery in Prague. In both these important cultural institutions, he met with their directors - Marek Pokorná and Vladimír Rösel.
Zhang Xiaogang belongs among those Chinese artists who have for a long time been expressing an interest in Czech culture and its projection abroad. He is interested in Czech (or at least originating from the Czech lands) literature, be it Franz Kafka, Milan Kundera or Bohumil Hrabal, in Czech film and photography, as well as, naturally, Czech visual art. His visit once again confirmed that despite the geographical distance, our cultures are in many respects very close and that its representatives lead an interesting dialogue that excites them, enriches them and, most of all, connects them.
