On the evening preceding this year’s national holiday celebrating the foundation of the Czechoslovak state, Members of the Czechoslovak Legionary Community visited the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing and paid their respects at the memorial of the fallen Czechoslovak legionaries.
Mr. Milan Mojžíš, Mr. Jiří Charfreitag and Mr. Michal Rak laid wreaths at the memorial, commemorating bravery of the men fighting for the foundation of the independent Czechoslovak state during the World War I.
Between 1918–1920, Czechoslovak legionaries were present in today’s China, specifically the Manchuria region. One of the most crucial points in their journey along the Trans-Siberian Railway was the city of Harbin, then a major railroad and business hub. After the fighting ceased, some legionaries stayed in the area for a time, while others settled down permanently. The buildings of the former Consulate and Residence remain as a reminder of this particular chapter of Czechoslovak history, as well as the bravery of the soldiers, who fought all the way in Asia to realize the ideal of Czechoslovak independence so far from their home.
