On December 13, the Czech Embassy participated in the second annual charity Christmas market of European embassies organised by the Ukrainian Embassy in Beijing. More than 1,300 visitors had the opportunity to learn about Czech Christmas traditions, taste Czech drinks and try out typical Christmas customs.
The second annual Christmas market of European embassies, this year taking place in exceptionally beautiful snowy conditions, was situated in the Christmas-decorated premises of the Embassy of Ukraine who organised the event. Its aim was to introduce the Chinese audience to the diverse Christmas traditions of European countries. 17 embassies participated in the event and the markets enjoyed a large number of guests who were able to learn about the main customs and holiday specialties of individual countries at the individual stands. The program was also supplemented by the Ukrainian side, which prepared choral singing, a Christmas play and many activities for children.
The Czech stand offered visitors the opportunity to decorate their own gingerbread cookies, taste Czech wine and beer, and learn more about the traditions associated with Christmas Eve. Candles in walnut shells floated on the table, and embassy staff explained to visitors not only the symbolism of this custom, but also, for example, who is in charge of bringing the children their gifts instead of Santa Claus and why Czechs wait for the Golden Pig on the Christmas Eve.
