From September 10–12, 2025, the second edition of the international exhibition and conference on water management – Baku Water Week (BWW) – took place at the Baku Expo Center. The event was officially opened by the Chairman of the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan, Mr. Z. Mikayilov, and became an important platform for discussions on challenges, technologies, and investments in the water sector.
A Wide Range of Technologies and Services
Approximately 70 companies and delegations from more than 15 countries, including the Czech Republic, participated in the exhibition. The displays included technologies for drinking water treatment, sewage systems, irrigation, desalination, flood protection, laboratory equipment, ICT solutions, artificial intelligence, measurement and control systems, construction and drilling equipment, and other innovations.
The conference featured two main panel discussions:
“Water for the Future: From Scarcity to Strategy” – focused on water resource management, infrastructure, digitalization, alternative sources, and science diplomacy.
“Adding Value to Water” – dedicated to ecology, recycling, advanced technologies, and innovation.
During the event, several important agreements were signed, including a memorandum between Azerbaijan and Hungary on cooperation in water management, and a protocol between the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan and SOCAR Green on energy efficiency.
Czech Presence at BWW
The Czech Republic was represented by MEGA a.s., whose Head of DAIRY and WATER segments, Mr. M. Jirdásek, was the first speaker at the conference. A significant role was also played by the T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute (VÚV TGM), whose Deputy Director for Research, Ing. L. Ansorge, Ph.D., participated in the panel discussion titled “Water sustainability through science and innovations.” VÚV TGM’s participation followed the April PROPED incoming mission, during which representatives of VÚV TGM signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Scientific Research Institute for Water and Melioration/SMETI.
Opportunities for Czech Companies
In recent years, Azerbaijan has been investing in the modernization of irrigation systems, construction of reservoirs, and pilot projects for desalinating water from the Caspian Sea.
A notable development was the participation of a representative from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), which plans to open a branch in Azerbaijan. IWMI operates in Central Asia from its headquarters in Tashkent, covering countries such as Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
The establishment of an IWMI branch in Azerbaijan presents a global cooperation opportunity for Czech companies, both those already active in the country and those seeking to enter markets in Central Asia. Czech technologies in water treatment, desalination, digitalization, and ecological solutions have the potential to become key components in regional sustainable development projects.
