Czech Republic Continues to Support Greece in the Area of Migration

In 2026 and 2027, the Czech Republic will continue to support Greece in managing migration flows, particularly from Africa and the Middle East. As in previous years, Czech assistance will focus on the MERIMNA projects, which provide support to unaccompanied migrant children. This year marks the Czech Republic’s fourth contribution to the initiative, with funding exceeding one million euros.

On 27 October 2026, a new cooperation agreement in the area of migration between the Czech Republic and the Hellenic Republic was signed at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Athens. On behalf of the Czech Republic, the agreement was signed by Ambassador Ivo Šilhavý, acting on the authorization of Pavla Novotná, Director of the Department for Asylum and Migration Policy at the Czech Ministry of the Interior. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Greece was represented by its Head of Mission, Valon Halimi.

The project “MERIMNA V: Supporting Protection and Assistance for Unaccompanied Migrant Children at the Northern Border of Greece, Fylakio RIC”, with a budget of 25 million Czech crown, will support the operation of a safe zone at the Fylakio Reception and Identification Centre in northern Greece, near the borders with Türkiye and Bulgaria, from November 2026 to October 2027. The financial contribution was approved by the Czech government in October 2026 and will be provided through the Czech Ministry of the Interior’s “Aid in Place program” (Pomoc na místě).

The MERIMNA projects focus on providing assistance to unaccompanied migrant children and adolescents. The Czech Republic has been contributing to these projects since 2023. They are implemented by IOM in cooperation with the Hellenic Ministry of Migration and Asylum.
