NATO Secretary General´s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, Ambassador Marriet Schuurman, visited Jordan on 15 – 19 November. The aim of her visit was to get acquainted with the state of training programs for the servicewomen in Jordanian armed forces and assess the current stage of the project, funded by the Alliance´s Trust Fund NATO - Jordan III.
Following the courtesy calls to representatives of the General Staff of the Jordan Armed Forces, Ambassador Schuurman visited Princess Basma Police Training Center and also current JAF Women's Training Center (center of Excellence), the present state of which no longer meet required standards and thanks to the Trust Fund project should in the future be replaced by a new facility.
At the end of her stay Ambassador Schuurman addressed the audience at a seminar for Jordanian servicewomen, entitled "The Role of Women in the Armed Forces: Challenges and Opportunities", which was organized by NATO Contact Point Embassy in collaboration with the Directorate of Women's Affairs of the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF DMWA ).
Among the speakers at the seminar were, among others, Colonel Magdalena Dvorakova, Gender Advisor to the International Military Staff of NATO in Brussels, and Major General Kristin Lund, Commander of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Also present were representatives of the embassies of NATO member states. In the course of the seminar, Ambassadors and Military Attaches of some donor countries received Trust Fund III commemorative coins from the hands of M. Schuurman.
It was the first time that about 50 servicewomen from the armed forces, police, gendarmerie and civil defense could meet on such a forum to share knowledge and experience not only in the field of training, but especially on the issues of social and social challenges that service in armed forces brings about.
