Project to Support Sustainable Development in Armenia – Agenda PA2030

The largest Armenian event, Yerevan Wine and Gastro Days, which has been held in the Armenian capital since 2017, focused this year on sustainable development in addition to gastronomy and winemaking. The accompanying program addressed the issue of food waste, a significant but often overlooked problem in Armenia. Thanks to the support of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Czech Embassy in Armenia invited Michaela Čihalíková Straková, the director of the Czech organization “Zachraň jídlo” (“Save food”), to Armenia. She has been dedicated to the issue of food waste since 2014. With its involvement in the program, the Czech Republic became the official special partner of this event, which attracted over 180,000 visitors to the streets of Yerevan.
 

In addition to her presentation at Yerevan Wine and Gastro Days, Ms. Čihalíková participated in several other events organized by the Czech Embassy in Yerevan to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The festival took place in Yerevan from June 7 to June 9, 2024, and included not only gastronomic and winemaking sections but also music performances, support for charitable organizations, and professional lectures and seminars.

This year, the festival organizers chose “food waste” as the main theme for the professional segment, an issue that is highly relevant due to the significant food waste, particularly in urban areas. The Czech Embassy in Yerevan invited the Czech non-profit organization “Save Food” to present some Czech solutions in this area and share their experiences in implementing projects aimed at reducing food waste.

Michaela Čihalíková Straková, the director of “Save Food,” gave a presentation on Czech solutions for food waste at the professional forum and participated in a panel discussion with other international experts.

In addition to participating in the seminar, there were consultations with the Armenian non-profit organization ISSD (Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Development of Communities), the only organization in Armenia addressing food waste as part of their activities supporting sustainable development and the circular economy.

Ms. Čihalíková, along with the Czech Ambassador to Armenia, Petr Pirunčík, also visited the Armavir province, where they met with young environmental activists from “The Green Hub.” Ms. Čihalíková introduced the young activists to the Czech Republic's activities in sustainable development, especially concerning food waste. The interactive discussion also covered topics such as a healthy lifestyle and the development of cycling in Armenia. Additionally, the Czech representatives learned about sustainable agricultural production issues, directly visiting orchards around the village of Yervandashat with local farmers.

Sharing Czech experiences and practical steps to reduce food waste also took place during a meeting with members of the Armenian Hotel Association, organized by the Czech Embassy in collaboration with ISSD.

The participation of the director of "Save Food" in these events in Armenia was made possible by funding from the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of activities supporting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
