President of the UMFCCI: The main opportunities for Czech companies are in agriculture, food processing, healthcare and the garment

Czech companies interested in doing business in Myanmar have more opportunities to make commercial contacts and to find Myanmar partners thanks to cooperation between the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Yangon and the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI).

UMFCCI is an important organization with over 75 affiliated associations and more than 70,000 active member companies operating in all sectors of commerce and industry in all regions and states of Myanmar. UMFCCI and its affiliated associations have excellent knowledge of demands and needs of the Myanmar’s private sector and are invaluable partners in searching for relevant business contacts.

With the aim to further intensify the cooperation with the UMFCCI, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Myanmar Mrs. Hana Mottlová held a meeting with the President of the UMFCCI U Zaw Min Win on 16th January 2020. During their discussion, Ambassador Mottlová highlighted that Czech companies are interested in Myanmar and they can offer high quality products and advanced technologies. According to the UMFCCI President, Czech companies are welcome in the Myanmar market. In his opinion, there would be demand especially for agriculture and food processing products and technologies. These two sectors are the backbone of the Myanmar economy, while modernization and innovation is much needed in both areas.

Another important opportunity for Czech business in Myanmar could be medical products. As the network of healthcare facilities in the country grows and clinics offer more advanced treatment, there is increasing demand for pharmaceutical products and medical equipment. This view was confirmed by Dr. Win Si Thu from the Myanmar Pharmaceutical and Medical Equipment Entrepreneurs‘ Association, who was also present at the meeting.

The garment industry of Myanmar, on the other hand, can be a very interesting opportunity for Czech investors. With its qualified labour force and competitive production costs, Myanmar is very attractive for garment companies from around the world. Garments of global brands are manufactured in Myanmar and Czech producers may make use of this opportunity as well. The advantages of Myanmar’s garment industry were presented at the meeting by Daw Khine Khine Nwe from Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association. She confirmed that her organization is ready to cooperate with Czech investors.

The Czech Ambassador further informed the President and the present members of the UMFCCI management about some forthcoming events. A delegation from the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic will visit Myanmar in February 2020. Several Czech companies active in the pharmaceutical industry, food processing and glass making will send their representatives to Myanmar during spring 2020. U Zaw Min Win embraced the Czech Ambassador’s plan to hold events – seminars in Myanmar regions to promote Czech business. He also proposed cities where such events could be most successful.
