2024 - THE YEAR OF CZECH MUSIC
The Year of Czech Music is a celebration held once a decade on every year that ends on the number four, a number that marks many Czech music anniversaries. Throughout the year, the Embassy will present the works of extraordinary Czech composers. This year, in particular, also features the 200th anniversary of the birth of Bedřich Smetana, known as the “father of Czech music.” In the fall, the Embassy will highlight Smetana in its annual Mutual Inspirations Festival.

BENNEWITZ QUARTET
Founded in 1998 at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, the quartet was named after the famous Czech violinist and teacher Antonin Bennewitz (1833-1926). The ensemble established its reputation by winning two leading chamber music competitions—the Osaka Chamber Music and Festa (2005) and the Prémio Paolo Borciani (2008).

Since then, the quartet has performed at various international music festivals and prominent concert halls, receiving numerous awards, including the Classic Prague Award for the Best Chamber Music Performance (2019).

During the 2023/24 season, the Bennewitz Quartet returns to numerous stages in Europe (Stuttgart, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Linz, Bilbao), debuting in Klagenfurt, Darmstadt and Duisburg. The quartet will tour again in the United States and Canada, and will continue various concert projects in the Czech Republic, including its engagement in Dvořák’s integral string quartet performance within the Dvořák’s Prague Festival. The ensemble is currently preparing the release of its new CD featuring the string quartets by “those that used to play together” - Haydn, Mozart, Vaňhal and Dittersdorf.
