The Czech Embsassy invites you to the exhibition of Barbora Fastrová and Johana Pošová at the Contemporary Art Center

The Embassy of the Czech Republic to Lithuania has officially opened the exhibition of "Breasts, Children, Creatures, and Waste" (2022) by Barbora Fastrová & Johana Pošová at the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius and cordially invites you to visit it! The artists presented a large-scale hand-woven tapestry made from recycled fabrics that would otherwise end up being disposed of. The work deals not only with the issue of sustainability, but also with the theme of motherhood and the relationship between man and nature. The exhibition will be open to the public until the 4th of  May.

The artists have used different colored used clothes, bedding and fabric remnants from factories for a large tapestry woven solely from textile waste. In seven consecutive panels, they tell the story of fabric, but also the relation between man, plant and waste.

In addition to the environmental message, a more personal theme of the artists - motherhood - is also evident in the work. This is present not only literally, as both artists are mothers, but also in the allegorical sense of Mother Earth or Mother Nature.

The tapestry was created under the artists' hands over six months. They began by cutting and weaving strips of fabric, which they then gradually wove together on a grid. The handmade, homely work contrasts with the clean, secluded environment of the exhibition hall. It impresses not only with its vastness and complexity, but also with its attention to detail and colour combinations.

Originally, the tapestry "Breasts, Children, Creatures and Waste" was created as part of a project accompanying the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2022.

BARBORA FASTROVÁ (*1988) and JOHANA POŠOVÁ (*1985) have been collaborating for ten years and their work focuses on the relationship between nature and (Western) culture. They have also been dealing with the topic of sustainability for a long time - recycling serves both as a theme and as a part of their creative practice. They are experimenting with the extent to which their commitment to conscious and ecological behavior influences the preparation of exhibitions, their final form and the viewer experience.
