Eva Koťátková is one of the most influential personas of Czech modern art scene. In her work, she examines the individual’s relationship with social, institutional and physical structures, exploring the rules and obstacles which are a part of our everyday lives and which shape how we think, learn, move and create. Her artworks often unveil invisible forces which influence how we perceive the world around us.

In the site-specific adaptation of her installation „Interviews with the monster“ (2021) she deals with discrimination, rejection and exclusion, the rigid grip of normativity and the unreasonable, inert fears that arrive when face with something perceived as different or unintelligible. In her installation, the monster is not the „other“ but the embodiment of learned anxieties and irrational fears.

In her work, Koťátková often combines objects, collages, cutouts, costumes and texts into vast, playful, poetic and often performative installations in which she aims to show how deeply the social environment and its codes and norms inflict upon our personal lives.

The exhibition at Sapiegų rūmai offers and unique chance to immerse yourself in the world of Koťátková and indulge in topics that she opens also through participating in the rich additional programmes. Visitors are encouraged to join creative workshops with the author or join the viewing of her surreal film „Stomach of the World“ (2017). Her work invites to ponder upon not only how lives are formed by these invisible structures, but how they be challenged and transformed.
