On the occasion of International Human Rights Day and to commemorate the legendary breakfast between French President Mitterrand and Czechoslovak dissidents in 1988, the Czech and French Embassies in Vienna organised a meeting with Belarusian human rights defenders active in Austria.
The breakfast, which took place on 12 December, was attended by Iryna Piarvoikina, Olga Shparaga, Alisa Ryzhichenka and Mikhail Smolski. It was symbolically dedicated to Ales Bialiatski, head of the human rights organization Vyasna, political prisoner of the Belarusian regime, the first recipient of the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize (2013) and of the Homo homini Award of „People in Need“ and the winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize. The participants discussed the situation of Belarusian human rights defenders at home and abroad, of Belarusian prisoners of conscience, as well as the complicity of the Belarusian regime in the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
