Book: From Empire to Republic

In the year 2018, Metropole – the Viennese English-language magazine – embarked on the year-long reporting project Empire to Republic. The authors cooperated with news outlets and individual journalists from Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Italy and Serbia.

“We worked together across borders, cultures and languages to create From Empire to Republic, a unique compendium of Central Europe today and in the last 100 years,” said the editors.

Using photos, interviews and first-hand experiences, these journalists portrayed Central Europe, as it evolved over the last 100 years and as it is today. They show us different places, yet speak about one shared history.
