The President of ECOSOC convened a special meeting on the aftermath of recent hurricanes

The ECOSOC Special Meeting on “Aftermath of recent hurricanes: Achieving a risk-informed and resilient 2030 Agenda” was held on October 24th in New York. The meeting aimed at highlighting different dimensions of the recent hurricanes, and enhancing coordination in response, recovery, reconstruction and development efforts in the aftermath.

The meeting was opened by the President of ECOSOC, H. E. Marie Chatardová. Opening remarks were also delivered by H. E Miroslav Lajčák, President of the General Assembly, H.E. Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary‐General of the UN, and Dr. Douglas Slater on behalf of CARICOM. The program continued with a panel discussion featuring the representatives of World Bank, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).

In her opening remarks, the President of ECOSOC emphasized that gains made in development can be erased if we do not pursue a risk-informed and resilient 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. She pointed out that in the process of recovering from the devastating impact of the recent disasters and building resilience for future ones, there is a dire need for cooperation of all stakeholders.
