President of ECOSOC participated in the inaugural opening of the Africa Week

On Monday, October 16th, the Africa Week 2017 was commenced in New York. The topic of this year’s session is “Supporting an integrated, prosperous, people-centered and peaceful Africa: Towards the implementation of Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. President of ECOSOC, H.E. Marie Chatardová, addressed the audience together with other inaugural speakers, which included H.E. Miroslav Lajčák, President of the General Assembly, H.E. António Guterres, Secretary General of United Nations, and H.E. François Delattre, President of Security Council for October 2017.

In her speech, president of ECOSOC reminded the audience that poverty and inequality in Africa should be combated through sustained economic growth and sustainable use of natural resources. She emphasized that people should be put first in this endeavor, and in particular, the youth and women, as they carry a disproportionate burden of the growth. She also highlighted some priorities from Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2063, such as promoting infrastructure, youth employment, economic integration and climate change.
