President of ECOSOC, Ambassador M. Chatardová opens the High-Level Political Forum

Ambassador M. Chatardová, President of the Economic and Social Council of the UN (ECOSOC) opened this year’s High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) calling it an opportunity to look back on progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In her speech she emphasized her priority of participation.

In regards to the inclusion of people in decision-making of the UN, M. Chatardová quoted Czech writer Milan Kundera saying that “the worst thing is not that the world is unfree, but that people have unlearned their liberty”. Commenting on the outcomes of the preparatory meetings and the UN Secretary General report, she outlined that a special consideration during this year’s HLPF will be given to six main areas: SDG 6 (water and sanitation for all), SDG 7 (sustainable and modern energy for all), SDG 11 (sustainable cities), SDG 12 (sustainable consumption and production), SDG 15 (sustainable forestry, ecosystems use and desertification) and SDG 17 (revitalize global partnership for sustainable development). The main theme for this year is “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies”.

This HLPF is taking place in New York between July 9 and July 18 in New York and more than 80 ministers and 2500 non-state actors are to be taking part.
