
Preparatory Meeting of the Economic and Social Council of the UN in Prague, Czech Republic

Czech Republic as the presidency country of the Economic and Social Council of the UN (ECOSOC) hosted a two-day Preparatory Meeting, which started on March 26, 2018 in Prague.
The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, A. Babiš, in declaring open the ECOSOC Preparatory Meeting held in Prague, on 26 and 27 March 2018, noted that more needs to be done to address pressing global challenges of peace and security, climate change and achieving sustainable development. Solutions to these challenges require building trust and strengthening the rule of law, foremost among other actions. Participatory approaches can foster trust among citizens and create ownership for the advancement of sustainable development.
Following the opening session, a high-level panel engaged the President of ECOSOC, Ambassador M. Chatardová, the President of the General Assembly, M. Lajčák and Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, A. Mohammed, in an interactive discussion on the 2030 Agenda and the importance of fostering participation of all in support of the Agenda. Two expert panels added to the day’s discussions, featuring case study participatory activities at the local level, from countries representing various continents and regions.
The President of ECOSOC, M. Chatardová, highlighted the importance of fostering participation of all, including by providing avenues for public engagement in governance. While playing a catalytic role in advancing sustainable development, participation of all is also a fundamental human right. The Economic and Social Council represents an inclusive platform for the engagement of stakeholders in support of the SDGs.
