Human Rights Council election

A discussion meeting of candidate countries for a membership in the Human Rights Council was held on 5 September 2018. Although there are 18 countries running for the membership, only 8 of them attended the meeting (Argentina, the Bahamas, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Austria and Uruguay). All the countries were asked to present their pledges related to their candidacy which was followed by several questions both from meeting attendees and also via Twitter #HRCpledging.

The topics concerned mainly the LGBT rights, but also the role of civil society and the duplication of work between Geneva and New York. In this regard, the Czech Republic represented by the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic in the United Nations, H.E. Marie Chatardová actively participated and responded to all questions, explicitly to a question from Twitter, concerning National Institution for Human Rights that comply with the Paris Principles. At the end of the meeting the candidate countries were asked to hypothetically assess their future work in the Human Rights Council and highlight their achievements through their membership in the Council. You can find the Czech Republic voluntary pledges here.
