On 16 April 2018 the Czech Republic participated in the Open Debate of the Security Council on sexual violence. The aim of the debate was to analyze how conflict-related sexual violence can be prevented, and more effectively and sustainably addressed, through the empowerment of women, the advancement of gender equality, and efforts to ensure access to justice and accountability identified in the annual Report of the Secretary General on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (S/2018/250).
Jiří Ellinger Chargé d'affaires a.i. called for increased efforts to put an end to impunity. Initiatives at the highest political levels must be translated into concrete actions to ensure that there was accountability. By implementing projects aimed at women’s participation and their economic empowerment, the Czech Republic was seeking to address some of the root causes of societal inequalities, including in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Georgia and Zambia. Equal participation of women and men in law enforcement agencies created a more conducive environment to reporting those serious crimes. In terms of enforcement, the Czech Republic, as a candidate to the Human Rights Council, continued to support the International Criminal Court and ad hoc international tribunals, as well as UN‑Women and its global activities.
