During its 77th session, the Sixth Committee considered a number of agenda items, such as Measures to eliminate international terrorism, Crimes against humanity, The scope and application of the principle of universal jurisdiction, and the Responsibility of States for internationally wrongful acts.
After three years of inaction, progress was made in consideration of the topic of crimes against humanity. This was not easy, as the Committee traditionally takes decisions by consensus only. After not being able to find consensus in previous years, this year the Committee adopted a resolution creating dedicated space for substantive discussion of the Draft Articles on Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Humanity, elaborated by the International Law Commission. The Committee decided to hold a resumed session in April 2023 and in spring 2024 in order to discuss the Draft Articles. The General Assembly should then decide what further action to take with regard to the Draft Articles. The Czech Republic, together with other EU Member States prefers the elaboration of an international convention on the basis of the Draft Articles.
