President of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), Ambassador M. Chatardová, delivered an opening speech at the Third Retreat of the Group of Friends of Monterrey, which took place in Oaxaca, Mexico between March 19 and March 20, 2018. The conference discussed main issues in development financing in the lead up to the Financing for Development Forum (FfD) and the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF).
The Group of Friends of Monterrey (FoM) was created in 2002 in the aftermath of the First International Conference on Financing for Development in order to move the debate on FfD forward and create a fair and sustainable international financial architecture. This year’s retreat in Mexico was especially important and discussed the FfD principles in terms of 2030 Agenda and will inform deliberations during the upcoming FfD Forum and subsequent HLPF.
President of the ECOSOC, Ambassador M. Chatardová, delivered an opening statement, where she hailed the general positive trends in the global economy but warned about the pitfalls of tightening monetary policies and short-term investments, which could cause a renewed debt-crisis in developing countries. The following debate was centered especially around the South-South development cooperation.
